Air chaos ends in Canberra

Flights in and out of Canberra have now resumed after being grounded by the threat from a volcanic ash cloud for most of the last 36 hours. (ABC TV News)

Canberra Airport predicts the backlog of passengers stranded by the Chilean ash cloud will be cleared by the end of the day.
Flights in and out of the national capital have now resumed after being grounded for most of the last 36 hours.
More than 12,000 passengers in Canberra were affected by the latest ash cloud delays.
Managing Director of Canberra Airport Stephen Byron says there are enough seats to cater for all those who need to fly.
"QANTAS and Virgin should be able to clear all of the passengers that want to get into or out of Canberra by close of business today," Mr Byron said.
"There are still seats available on flights as I speak now, to most of the destinations with both airlines. The backlog will be cleared by putting people in those vacant seats."

National delays

Air services around the country are gradually returning to normal after flight cancellations to Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Canberra and Adelaide.
Hundreds of travellers spent the night stranded at airports as flights around the country were disrupted for the second time in just over a week.
Across Australia Virgin Airlines estimated that 13,000 passengers would be affected today, while Qantas spokeswoman Olivia Wirth says the airline believed another 30,000 of its customers would have their travel be disrupted.
The Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre says Hobart will be the only major Australian city with ash over it at the end of the day.

Maruti loses millions on continued strike, fears of spillover mount

MUMBAI (Reuters) - India's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki, already slammed by sluggish sales, is expected to take another hit as a plant strike enters its second week, leading to millions of dollars in losses and a possible spillover to other factories.
The company, which accounts for half the cars sold in Asia's third largest economy, has faced a production loss of 8,400 units so far at its Manesar plant in northern India. That means an estimated loss of 2.8 billion rupees ($62.6 million).
The company, 54.2 percent-owned by Japan's Suzuki Motor Corp, posted its slowest pace of growth in more than two years last month. It posted a 1.9 percent rise in May sales this year, compared with a 28-percent rise a year earlier.
"The sector is already in bad shape because of continued rise in input costs and rising inflation. If the strike gets prolonged, it will have a major dent in Maruti's profitability," Kishor Ostwal, chairman of brokerage CNI Research, said.
Auto sales in India, which grew at a breakneck pace of 30 percent in 2010, are driven by a burgeoning aspirational middle class that relies mainly on bank loans for its purchases. But consistently rising interest rates have forced consumers to tighten their purse strings.
Auto sales rose 7 percent in May, their slowest pace of growth in two years, and analysts expect a further decline as higher fuel prices, interest rates and vehicle costs crimp demand in the world's second-fastest growing vehicle market.
A prolonged strike would also hurt component suppliers.
"Our dependence on Maruti is about 10 to 12 percent, of which around 4 percent is on Manesar," said Arvind Kapur, Managing Director at auto supplier Rico Auto Industries Ltd.
"But it's not the question of business from one plant. It's the question of the whole area getting affected. That should not happen," Kapur said.
Workers in the Manesar region, the greater metropolitan area of the nation's capital New Delhi, will hold a two-hour sympathy strike on Tuesday, several newspapers reported on Monday.
The employees are striking to have a new union recognized by management. Maruti Suzuki management is in talks with the workers and is considering acknowledging th new employees' union, a company spokesman said.
LABOUR WOES
India's auto sector has seen spurts of industrial unrest over the past two years.
In 2009, workers at a plant of Honda Motorcycle & Scooters India, a unit of Japan's Honda Motor Corp, engaged in a "go-slow" to protest wages and other issues. A "go-slow" involves employees working with reduced efficiency, typically used as a prelude or an alternative to a strike.
Last year, workers at Hyundai Motor's India plant went on a three-day strike. Almost half the workers at the Indian unit of Sweden's Volvo Bus Corp struck in 2010, protesting wages.
These strikes have raised questions over how India will preserve its status as a low-cost manufacturing base while avoiding growing discontent among employees.
India's labour laws are rated by the World Bank as among the most rigid and some analysts say they hurt corporate competitiveness in Asia's third-largest economy.
"To the extent they have lost production, we have also lost production, but it is not a huge quantity, and the impact is limited," said Paban K Kataky, a director at Exide Industries, India's top automotive battery maker. "The worry is that it should not spill over to other factories."
About 800 workers have been on strike since June 4 at the Manesar plant, demanding recognition of the new union. Maruti has one workers' union recognized by the management. It was unclear why the employees wanted another union recognized.
Maruti, which operates two manufacturing facilities in India, has fired 11 workers at the Manesar plant since the strike began, citing indiscipline. Media reports said employees are also demanding the 11 workers be reinstated.
The plant produces about 1,200 vehicles a day, including the popular Swift and A-Star hatchbacks and the DZiRE and SX4 sedans.
The company had earlier said it planned to invest $1.3 billion over the next three years on manufacturing plants to boost capacity.
Shares of Maruti, valued at $7.9 billion, closed down 0.14 percent at 1,224.95 rupees in a flat Mumbai market

Ex-cop Johannes Mehserle who shot, killed Oscar Grant at Oakland train station gets early release

A white ex-transit cop who shot and killed an unarmed black man at an Oakland train station on New Year's Day in 2009 got an early release from prison Monday.
Johannes Mehserle served just 11 months of his two-year jail term, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.
"He was released at 12:01 a.m.," a spokesman told CNN.
The 29-year-old scored an early release thanks to earning "good time" credit, with one point for every day spent in jail.
The slaying of 22-year-old Oscar Grant sparked outrage in Oakland, a northern California city.
His sentencing unleashed more violent protests when he was found guilty on a lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter in 2010.

The shooting death of Grant sparked massive protests in Oakland. (Marcio Jose Sanchez/AP)
The jury acquitted Mehserle of second-degree murder and voluntary manslaughter, more serious charges that would have meant more jail time.
"My son was murdered. He was murdered. He was murdered. My son was murdered," said Grant's mother, Wanda Johnson, said after the sentencing. "The system has let us down."
"We really don't feel like there has been accountability for his actions," Cephus Johnson, Grant's uncle, said this month, the Oakland Tribune reported. "We were totally let down by the judicial system."
Grant had been pulled from a train at Oakland's Fruitvale BART Station at the time of the shooting. He was lying facedown on the platform when Mehserle pulled his weapon and fired.
The former transit cop claimed at the time that he meant to use his Taser, but unintentionally pulled his gun instead.
Mehserle quit his job after the incident and was arrested in Nevada.
Mass outrage last year caused the trial to be held in Los Angeles, and Mehserle's lawyers reported receiving scores of death threats, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. Dozens were arrested during protests that often turned hostile.

Mavericks win NBA championship in Miami

For Dirk Nowitzki, the resume is complete. He's an NBA champion.
For LeBron James, the agonizing wait continues for at least one more year.
Avenging what happened five years ago in perfect turnabout style, the Dallas Mavericks won their first NBA title by winning Game 6 of these finals in Miami 105-95 on Sunday night — celebrating on the Heat's home floor, just as Dwyane Wade and his team did to them in the 2006 title series.
"I really still can't believe it," said Nowitzki, who had 21 points and took home finals MVP honors.
The Mavericks won four of the series' last five games, a turnabout that could not have been sweeter after seeing the Heat celebrate their first title in Dallas after Game 6 of the 2006 finals.
"Tonight," Jason Terry said, "we got vindication."
ames did not. Not even close, and a year unlike any other ended they way they all have so far - with him still waiting for an NBA title.
He scored 21 points for Miami, shook a few hands afterward, and departed before most of the Mavs tugged on their championship hats and T-shirts. Chris Bosh had 19, Mario Chalmers 18 and Dwyane Wade 17 for the Heat.
"We worked so hard and so long for it," Nowitzki said. "The team has had an unbelievable ride."
So did the Heat. Unlike Dallas, theirs wasn't a joyride.
"It goes without saying," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "You're never really prepared for a moment like this. … Neither team deserved this championship more than the other, but Dallas earned it."
Make no mistake: Miami lost the finals, but the blame will be directed at James. Even he knew that after the way he left Cleveland with "The Decision" and all the animus that generated not just in Ohio but around the entire league, the only way he could silence some critics was with a title.
Instead, he got more criticism … and a thinly veiled jab from his former owner with the Cavaliers, Dan Gilbert, who reveled in the moment on Twitter.
"Mavs NEVER stopped & now entire franchise gets rings," Gilbert wrote. "Old Lesson for all: There are NO SHORTCUTS. NONE."
Mavs coach Rick Carlisle joined a highly elite group, those with NBA titles as both a player and a head coach. Only 10 other men are on that list, including the presumably retired-for-good Phil Jackson, one of Carlisle's mentors in K.C. Jones, and Heat President Pat Riley — who led Miami past Dallas in 2006, and was the mastermind of what the Heat did last summer by getting James, Wade and Bosh on the same team with an eye on becoming a dynasty.
It might still happen, of course.
But even after 72 wins this season, including playoffs, the Heat lost the last game. And that means this year was a disappointment — except to just about everyone else in the NBA, or so it would seem.
"This is a true team," Carlisle said. "This is an old bunch. We don't run fast or jump high. These guys had each other's backs. We played the right way. We trusted the pass. This is a phenomenal thing for the city of Dallas."
Hating the Heat became the NBA's craze this season, and the team knew it had no shortage of critics, everyone from Cleveland (where "Cavs for Mavs" shirts were popular during these finals) to Chicago (the city James and Wade both flirted with last summer) and just about every place in between lining up to take shots at Miami.
Given their newfound popularity, meet the new America's Team.
Sorry, Cowboys — your long-held moniker might have to be ceded to your city's NBA club. When it was over, Mavs owner Mark Cuban ran onto the court to hug Carlisle, then punched the air and whooped.
When the Mavericks took a 2-0 lead in Dallas during the '06 finals, plans for their victory parade were announced. The Mavs didn't win another game in that series.
Now, that parade will finally happen. And when it's over, then the league's uncertainty will truly begin. Labor strife likely awaits, and although more talks geared toward movement on a new deal are scheduled for this week, both owners and players are bracing for a lockout to begin once the current collective bargaining agreement expires June 30.
What happens with the next deal may affect the Heat more than anyone. Some owners will insist on a hard cap, rolled-back salaries and, potentially, trying to bust some current deals — which could break up the Big 3 before get another chance to win a title together.
A gloomy end to the season may bring an even gloomier offseason for Miami.
"Every situation has felt like it was an our-back-against-the-wall situation," James said Sunday morning, hours before Game 6 began. "We've been able to figure it out and find our way through and scratch our way through. This is the last test. This is the last pop quiz for us that we need to pass in order to make it all worth it."
They didn't pass. So therefore, it wasn't all worth it. Except, of course, from the Dallas perspective.
Miami had chances to take command and wasted them all. The Heat missed 13 of their 33 free throws, let the Mavericks score 27 points off turnovers and simply could not get a rebound in the final minutes.
Nowitzki finished 9 for 27, and the Mavs still won. He was 1 for 12 in the first half, and they were still ahead, 53-51, thanks largely to Terry's 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting, along with a 17-4 edge in points off turnovers.
Plus, after James got off to such a fast start, he had two points in the final 19-plus minutes of the half.
James didn't score in the second half until a layup with 1:49 remained in the third - his first field-goal attempt since 1:05 remained in the half. Kidd made a 3-pointer late in the period, pushing the Dallas lead to 79-71, and it seemed like the only people standing in the arena were the players, referees, Cuban and a few guys around the Dallas bench.
Dallas took control in the second half after some wild back-and-forths in the opening two quarters. Miami took its last lead of the game — the season — just 64 seconds into the second half, lost it 16 seconds later and chased the Mavericks the rest of the way.
They never caught them.
Jason Kidd, at 38 years old, got his first championship. Nowitzki got his at 32, Terry at 33. They were featured on the video screen in their building in Dallas during this series on what seemed like a constant loop, each posing with the NBA trophy and looking longingly at it, standing mere inches from it, as if to say "so close, yet so far away."
No more.
It's theirs.
Nowitzki sealed it with 2:27 left, hitting a jumper near the Miami bench to put Dallas up 99-89, and some fans actually began leaving. Nowitzki walked to the Mavs' side slowly, right fist clenched and aloft.
He knew it. Everyone did. Heat coach Erik Spoelstra implored his team to foul in the final minute, and even then, they couldn't catch the Mavericks.
"All those unique individual stories is what propelled us to this victory," Terry said.
Dallas expected a big early push from Miami, and the Mavs' suspicions were proved correct. James made his first four shots, and the Heat raced out to a 20-11 lead.
It was erased — and then some — quickly, as soon as Dallas went to the zone defense that befuddled Miami again.
Dallas needed 5 ½ minutes to rip off a 21-4 run, making 9 of 12 shots during the stretch. And much of that came with Nowitzki on the bench with two fouls, the first time he's been whistled for more than one in the opening quarter of a playoff game this season.
The Mavs were off and running. DeShawn Stevenson made a pair of 3-pointers within a span of 24 seconds to give Dallas a 40-28 lead with 9:42 left in the half. Dallas turned Miami's first six turnovers into 14 points, and the hundreds of blue-clad Mavs fans stood and roared, with Cuban waving his arms as if to lead the cheers from behind his team's bench.
Things turned quickly and got heated for good measure.
Miami scored the next 14 points to reclaim the lead at 42-40, a streak snapped only after Stevenson, Udonis Haslem and Chalmers got technicals with 6:25 left in the half after a midcourt mini-melee with mostly amounted to some words and a couple of shoves.
"A player will not automatically be suspended for leaving the bench if he has already left the bench because a timeout was called," the NBA announced later in the game. "However, we need to review the circumstances of this particular incident, which we will do, after the game."
So the NBA will watch replays. The Heat, they probably won't — not for a long while.
It was 81-72 entering the fourth, after Ian Mahinmi made a foul-line jumper as time expired in the third, just his third basket of the entire series.
None were bigger. The Mavs could taste a title.
Of the principal characters from the 2006 series, only Cuban, Nowitzki and Terry remain from the Mavericks' side, and for them, the beginning of this championship celebration seemed sweeter than even they could have imagined. Terry won't have to get his tattoo — the one of the NBA championship trophy — removed, which he vowed to have done if Miami won this series. Nowitzki will never be in the conversation of 'Best player without a title' again.

New Delhi, Jun 13 (PTI) Asking CBI to explain where Rs 200 crore, allegedly diverted to DMK-owned Kalaignar TV in 2G scam, has gone, the Supreme Court today sought the probe agency''s response on DMK MP Kanimozhi''s bail plea in the case.
A bench of justices B S Chauhan and Swatanter Kumar, while terming "corruption as the worst form of human rights violation," asked CBI to come out with a status report on the loss to the state exchequer due to the award of 13 licences to one of the telecom operators and trial proceedings in the CBI special court.
The court granted a week''s time to CBI to file its response on the three issues and the bail pleas of Kanimozhi and Sharad Kumar, MD of Kalaignar TV.

Rapture preacher suffers stroke at California home

The California radio preacher who predicted the world would end last month was recuperating Monday after suffering a mild stroke, a colleague said.

Doctors were monitoring the progress of 89-year-old radio host Harold Camping since he suffered the stroke Thursday.
"He is presently recuperating in a local hospital and the doctors are pleased with his progress," Family Radio's special projects coordinator Michael Garcia said. "Mr. Camping's family appreciates your thoughts and prayers."

Camping's Oakland-based Christian network spent more than $100 million publicizing the evangelist's Rapture prediction over the past seven years, The Oakland Tribune reported.

When the apocalypse failed to occur on May 21, Camping was widely mocked and he called it "a very difficult time."

He has since insisted that his prediction was overall correct, but said spiritual Rapture began a few weeks ago, and the Earth actually will be obliterated on Oct. 2
