Heiva i Tahiti has started but festivities started a week earlier in the neighboring town of Faaa, which organized its own traditional festival.

Heiva I Tahiti
While the official opening of the Heiva i Tahiti took place June 29, 2007 with the start of va'a (Polynesian canoe) competitions, the festivities of this "July 2007" started a week earlier in the neighboring town of Faa'a, which organized its own traditional festival.
Many events will take place in the town of ex President Oscar Temaru and more specifically, a dances and singing competition that should keep all of its promises.

As to the "official" Heiva, it proposes this year a complete program with singing and dancing, arts & crafs competitions, traditional sports and many other events for the pleasure of many spectators. Canoe races open the festivities, but starting July 1st is the start of the singing and dancing competition held in To'ata Square as usual. A dozen night shows spread during the length of the Heiva, will reward the best groups, but also the bands and individual performances.
Aspecial night, proposed by the great choreograher Coco Hotahota will take place on opening night, a priceless moment for all nostalgic of this group. Fire walking, famous all over the world, will take place July 4 at 6PM in Punaauia. The Va'a (canoes) races in the high seas, with hundreds of racers, will take place starting July 6. Another well awaited event: the races of traditional sailing canoes, to be held in the port of Papeete on Sunday July 8. Traditional sports, such as stone lifting, spear throwing or coconut husking will start the next day at the Museum of Tahiti and her Islands. Once again, the Heiva will bring a whole population together for nearly a month to celebrate its culture, always more alive, with thousands of participants and dozens of thousands spectators.
