The Lokpal Bill drafting committee is headed for an irretrievable breakdown with Anna Hazare threatening to resume his fast a day after Independence Day, and the ministers on the joint drafting committee making it clear that there would be no giving in to demands that breach Constitutional norms or undermine due political process.

This hardening of stand on either side came a day after the deadlocked meeting as Team Anna slammed the government for “wasting our time” and Home Minister P Chidambaram underlining that “fasting” wasn’t exactly the way to get a Bill through in any democratic process.
Chidambaram said that despite this stalemate, the government was committed to “drafting a strong and sound Lokpal Bill” by June 30. “This is a complex bill. Much of the discussion is reducing it to binary choices. In fact, some of those who participated seem to think my way or the highway,” he said. “There is a Constitution, the basic features of which cannot be altered. There are political realities. No party in India commands a majority in Parliament. There is a gap between what is desirable and (what is) feasible. We must respect the political process.”
