Join Us on the National Day of Prayer

This year, millions of Americans will come together on May 5 for the 60th Annual National Day of Prayer and collectively pray for our nation. The National Day of Prayer observance has occurred annually since 1952, when a joint resolution of the United States Congress was established and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman.

The prayer theme for this year is "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God," which focuses on Psalm 91:2. "I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust." To elaborate on this theme, National Day of Prayer Task Force (NDPTF) Chairman Shirley Dobson says, "At this perilous and uncertain juncture in our country's history, it is critical that we remain in prayer. The American people continue to be plagued with challenges that defy simple answers, and our hope lies in humbly seeking the Almighty's guidance, protection, and blessing—not only on the National Day of Prayer, but throughout the year."

Why America Desperately Needs Prayer

Our nation's willful rebellion against God's biblical standards continues to bring winds of change upon America. A "red sky" is rising over our land, warning us of gathering spiritual and moral storms that threaten to destroy all the blessings we have received from God.1
Jesus himself spoke about how sailors and fishermen knew how to read the signs in the skies that could forecast the weather. An old weather proverb based on Jesus' own words goes like this:
Red sky in the morning, sailor take warning.
Red sky at night, sailor's delight. 2

There are many "red skies" currently glowing in America's morning: economic troubles due to greed, rampant crime, eroding morality, threats of terrorism… Although these events are tragic, they can serve as warning signals for our nation. Just as pain in our physical body lets us know that something is wrong, the social, political and moral red flags of our day tell us that America has some areas of unhealthiness that need our prayers.

What You Can Do

This year, let's do whatever we can to be a part of this important day—whether it's setting some time aside to pray by ourselves, getting together with coworkers to pray during the lunch hour or attending a prayer service at a church—make time to pray for our nation. Remember, it's not how we pray that's important...it's the fact that we take the time to talk with God that makes all the difference
