Sourav Ganguly stayed till the end to see Pune home comfortably. A sad end to Deccan's home campaign and a brilliant start for Ganguly in IPL-4.
Mitchell Marsh and Manish Pandey helped Pune Warriors India overwhelm hosts Deccan Chargers by six wickets in their Indian Premier League match at Hyderabad on Tuesday. The Warriors needed just 18.2 overs to notch up their second consecutive win, after restricting the home team for a 136 runs in 20 overs.
Pandey made a 42-ball 49 and Australian Marsh took 4-25 as Warriors bowled and fielded impressively to anchor their team to a confident win over struggling Chargers.
Chasing a modest target of 137 runs, Warriors' Jesse Ryder (35) and Pandey got off to a terrific start adding 55 runs for the first wicket in a volley of strokes as Deccan bowlers managed little purchase on a docile pitch.
Deccan seamer Daniel Christian bagged couple of wickets to put Pune under pressure but comeback king Sourav Ganguly (32*) kept the momentum going for the visitors with his sensible batting.
Unbeaten Ganguly and Callum Ferguson (15) carried the visitors over the threshold with 10 balls remaining.
Electing to bat first, the home team got off to a promising start with openers Shikhar Dhawan (24) and Dwaraka Ravi Teja (30) adding 51 runs in 6.4 overs. Both openers looked in supreme touch during their stay at the crease, unleashing classic shots against spinner Rahul Sharma and pace bowler Wayne Parnell.
However, skipper Yuvraj Singh introduced himself in the seventh over and got rid of belligerent Dhawan instantaneously. Teja followed soon when he miscued a delivery from Mitchell Marsh, which went on to shatter his stumps.
Their set batsmen gone in quick succession, skipper Kumar Sangakkara arrived as Deccan needed to rebuild again. However Rahul Sharma got rid of Sangakkara for just 12 runs before the home team reached the 100-run mark.
JP Duminy (30) and Daniel Christian (10) then tried to give backbone to the home team before Pune fought back with some quick wickets. They had added just 22 runs for the fourth wicket before medium pacer Marsh triggered a batting collapse.
Impressive Marsh took four wickets at the expense of 25 runs in his allotted four overs to ensure there was no fight-back from the remaining batsmen, as Chargers failed to offer any substantial scores. Yuvraj also took two wickets in his four overs giving away just 17 runs.
At Hyderabad the loudest cheer was reserved for Sourav Ganguly who replaced Abhishek Jhunjhunwala in the Pune line-up.
